If I Didn't Have Dogs

by Chris Stack

If I did not have dogs
How different would life be?
No worries, peaceful, happy and
Totally stress free?

My bed would be my own again
No snoring dog in sight
No waking up to pungent smells
In the middle of the night

My shopping bill would be reduced
Cut by half at least
No flea treatment, no worm tablets
No dog food, no pet treats

I'd have time to grow some veg
Write poems, read some books
Without concern for how my dogs
Got on with next door's chooks

I could go on holiday
Anytime, anywhere!
Without the need to find a room
That man and dogs could share

But there's no point in dreaming
The dogs are here to stay
They're with me every minute
Of every bloody day!

And I admit I like them
Just a little bit
Despite the torn up cushions
The vomit and the sh_t

Despite the late night searches
Out till 3am
Because the little buggers
Have escaped again

Perhaps it's what fate had in store
For those two dogs and me
For us to be together
We three, we happy three
